RECOIL Traction Bars: Last year BDS Suspension introduced the revolutionary spring loaded traction bar system, the RECOIL traction bar. This patent pending design was engineered to improve traction and limit axle wrap without negatively affecting suspension travel or ride quality. BDS has expanded its lineup to now include specific mounting kits for the 2004-2017 Ford F150 trucks. These next generation traction bars offer you the freedom to tune the spring tension for optimal performance on-road, off-road, towing, or competition pulling. These traction bars can be used on stock height or lifted trucks and work with both lift blocks and replacement leaf spring kits. They use a full floating design that won't bind up allowing the full range of wheel travel without limiting articulation.

These new RECOIL traction bars are built to the highest standards for the ultimate performance on and off-road. The bars are fabricated from 2" OD x 3/16'' wall steel tubing with a threaded bung welded in toward the axle and a CNC machined end at the frame. The axle mount uses the tried and true BDS large forged flex end and jam nut to take whatever abuse you throw at it. Utilizing a forged housing with large 1-1/4" -12 threaded shank, a single sided snap ring and 1-piece flex ball, the flex ends are capable of up to 15-degrees of misalignment in either direction. At the frame end the bar uses a durometer specific polyurethane bushing and free floats in the traction bar utilizing a pair of dual stage internal compression springs and UHMW polyurethane bearings. The main spring has a 3000lb spring rate. Both ends are greaseable and serviceable. Fully assembled the RECOIL traction bars are 60" long and mount to the vehicle using fabricated 1/4" steel brackets. Bracket kits are vehicle specific. The frame brackets install by drilling mounting holes for the brackets while the axle brackets install over the factory u-bolt plates. The traction bars and mounting brackets use a durable gloss black powdercoat finish.

These new RECOIL traction bars are built to the highest standards featuring quick and easy adjustment while installed on the vehicle. To adjust spring tension, use the supplied spanner wrenches at the axle to loosen the jam nut. From there the main bar can be rotated to load or unload the springs at the frame side of the bar. Using the concave end of the wrench handle against the frame end check the location of the end of the main bar in relation to the notches on the wrench to verify the load on the springs, the shorter the distance the more loaded the springs are. Repeat this process on the other traction bar and use the wrenches to tighten down the jam nuts and you are ready to go! Join the revolution with the next generation RECOIL traction bars from BDS Suspension.

At this point we haven’t comfirmed compatibility on the ’17 F150 Raptor. That said we don’t expect any changes to keep the standard F150 kits from installing on the Raptor.

What exactly is the main purpose of the traction bar? Do you really need this if you won’t be off roading your truck? Same as the UCA?

Hey Mike,
the primary purpose of a traction bar is for on-road use in high-torque situations like quick acceleration that can cause axle wrap. Axle wrap is when the tires grip and cause the axle rotate on a pivot around the leaf spring, more commonly occurring on lifted applications when rear lift blocks are used. Traction bars help control the axle from pivoting, but they can also bind up the rear suspension limiting wheel travel and articulation. The benefit of the RECOIL design is an adjustable preload and full floating design that won’t bind up suspension travel. Our lift kits are designed to not require the use of traction bars, but if you plan to boost the engine performance or tow trailers they are a great option to keep the rear axle planted and eliminate axle wrap

Does this kit always come with the Spanner wrench or does this kit have the option for it not to come with the kit?

Hey Roy, the main Recoil box (#123409) used for all kits includes the pair of spanner wrenches. We don’t off an option to order the bars w/o the wenches.

Hey Chris, these are designed to be used on both 2WD and 4WD ’04+ F150 trucks so they’ll be compatible with your current setup

I have a 2017 F150 with a 4″ BDS coil over lift and Airlift bags on the rear. Would these help with pay load stability with this setup? If so what would the benefits be? I am curious if they would improve the ride further as I have slide in truck bed camper that just under the recommended payload.

Hey Aaron,
you’ve got a great setup as is with the lift and airbags to support additional weight and increase stability when towing. The Recoil traction bars would help with hard launches where the axle is trying pull forward and rotate under torque. They are adjustable so you’d be able to dial in the preload on the springs for your driving style. One thing to note, while the Recoils are designed for compatibility with our rear lift kit, you’ll want to check clearance to the airbag mounting brackets as there is the potential you’ll need to make modifications. Our recoil brackets mount on the underside of the axle using the leaf spring u-bolts. More on our instructions at http://bds-suspension.com/instructions/123419.pdf
