HD4

Cody Yoder out of Toledo, Ohio has built one hell of a twin turbo Duramax. The truck has been several years in the making and for us at BDS, its a bit of a homecoming. You see this ’08 Chevy Silverado 2500HD started its transformation from your run of the mill stock LMM to the show stopper it is now in BDS’s R&D shop. The truck was used to design, engineer and test the new (at that time) 7” high clearance suspension system for ’01-10 HDs. Following our stint with the truck it did as most new trucks do and headed to the dealer lot where it was bought and sold a few times until 2012 when Cody was tipped off that the truck was available and picked it up for his daily driver. With the keys in hand Cody began modding the truck to fit his personal taste, not leaving well enough alone in his quest to build the baddest Duramax around.

With the BDS 7” high clearance lift taken care of, Cody added Fox 2.0 shocks and cranked the torsion bars to get 7.5” out of the suspension. Full BDS leaf packs and a custom set of traction bars (powdercoated by Crystal Coatings) were added to keep the rear end planted during hard launches. The steering was beefed up with heavy duty tie-rod ends, tie-rod sleeves, straight center link and a Cognito steering brace. For wheels and tires Cody swapped out the chrome bling and Kumhos that were on it originally for a set of 37×13.50×22 Nitto Trail Grapplers mounted up on 22×14 Moto Metal 962s. As to be expected the new combo did cause some issues so the fenders were modified and a new inner fender liner was made to allow for tire clearance.

Powering this HD is the stock 6.6L Durmax Diesel outfitted with a slew of mods to help this truck roll coal wherever it goes. With the assistance of Outlaw Performance and Danville Performance the motor received a HSP twin turbo kit, 72MM 4049A VGT, 83MM TCT S483 BATMO, Exergy 12MM CP3, Exergy 100% overs, EFI Live w/ DSP5, 4” down pipe, 5” straight pipe, 6” MBRP exhaust tip, EGR delete, PPE race valve, Nitrous Express stacker, ported fuel rail fittings, FASS 150 lift pump, PCV reroute kit, and heat wrapped hot sections. The Allison transmission was fitted with a Suncoast GMax 6Pac and Suncoast 1053-1-3D torque converter that sends power back through the stock transfer case to the stock front/rear Dodge 11.5” diffs that use 3.73 gears and a Danville Performance rear diff cover. Following our photoshoot with Cody the truck ran on the Danville’s dyno where it set a new record for a stock bottom end LMM with 885HP and 1383TQ off the bottle.

Moving on to the exterior this truck features several mods done by both Cody and local Coldwater, MI shop Tuckey Motorsports. In addition to Reflex spray lining in bed, the roof, grille, bumper, fenders and rockers were sprayed for a tough scratch-free finish. The factory headlights were retained and now feature a smoked housing with 6K HID beams and LED turn signals. Additional lighting comes from (4) Rigid dually lights in the bumper and a pair of stacked 50” Rigid E-series light bars mounted to a Defender roof rack. Out back the stock taillights were smoked and a single Rigid dually is used. A set of Dee Zee nerf bars were installed to make accessing the cab a bit easier and inside the truck features stock leather seats, brushed aluminum painted dash panel, Aeroforce Interceptor pillar mounted gauges and a Pioneer SAT/NAV stereo.

This truck was been a 2.5 year process for Cody, and even longer since we had our hands on it. Over the years Cody has transformed it into the bad ass Duramax it is today continuing to mod it as no truck build is ever finished. Check out more from our shoot with Cody below and follow the truck on Instagram at CodyYoderOfficialPage.

SEMA Trucks: Freedom Fighter turned Big Thug

Each year the SEMA Show is flooded with amazing automobiles, lifted trucks, lower street rods, resto-mod classics and late model monsters all in the name of automotive customization. There’s something for everyone’s taste from the insane over-the-top to capable daily drivers. BDS Suspension attends this annual show out in Las Vegas and continues to make quite the statement with show vehicles scattered throughout the show grounds on display in exhibitor booths and featured vehicle spots.

Several years ago we got hooked up with Kelly Fromm, a retired US veteran with an eye for building some amazing rides. Kelly runs the Rev-It-Up for Wounded Warriors Memorial Tour,  a mobile memorial raising awareness and funds for wounded veterans. The tour has featured several vehicles from a 700+ hp Camaro (Veteran 1) and custom widebody ZL1 Camaro, to a ’10 Silverado (Fallen Warrior) and ’12 Chevy Dually (Freedom Fighter) tow rig all decked out with the lasted accessories and far-from-bashful patriotic graphics. With hundreds of thousands of dollars raised for wounded veterans, Kelly’s efforts are making a difference for disabled veterans coming back from oversees. Recently, however, a very unpatriotic and malicious act occurred. Kelly’s dually was vandalized, the graphics keyed and the truck damaged before its scheduled stop at the 2013 SEMA Show. With the show just around the corner, Kelly pulled the vinyl, fixed the body and opted for a fresh coat of cyber gray paint for a stealthy appearance. With the new look, Freedom Fighter became known as Big Thug.

Up front an Iron Cross bumper was installed for added protection. Rigid LEDs and a Warn winch were then installed to improve its recovery and visibility. The grill was swapped out for the RX3 model from RBP. Headlights were converted to Anzo USA projection units and up top a 50” LED light bar was installed. To improve the ground clearance a BDS 6.5” high clearance lift was installed along with Fox 2.0 shocks giving plenty of room to clear 35×12.50×22 Toyo M/Ts mounted up on 22 American Force Independence wheels. Iron Cross steps offer increased protection and make accessing the cab a bit easier. Out back an ARE “Z Series” cap was installed to add plenty of dry storage space and a CargoGlide rack system. Firestone airbags help keep the truck level when towing/hauling heavy loads. Under the hood the stock 6.6L Duramax was given some extra attention from an AEM cold air intake,  Edge Products Evolution CTS tuner, and a custom exhaust system. Inside the cab features Alga leather wrapped seats, a custom 3500-watt MTX stereo system and custom gauges to monitor the trucks vitals.

With the remodel, Big Thug continues to be Kelly’s primary tow rig hitting up events around the country for an amazing cause. We wish him the best and looking forward to  a continuing our partnership in the future. SEMA Trucks: PK’s Duramax

BDS has teamed up with Powerteq on a number of projects over the years and this is one of their latest creations, a 2011 Chevy Silverado 2500HD Duramax owner by PK Krwawecz. The build has been coming together piece by piece over the last year as PK started with a plain jane HD that now features a slew of mods in the performance, comfort and styling categories.

Up front the stock flimsy chrome bumper was pulled and in its place a beefy Fusion bumper that houses an assortment of Rigid LED lights. The stock grill was swapped for a custom mesh grill from Royalty Core. A BDS 6.5” high clearance lift kit with Fox 2.0 shocks provides extra clearance for 37×12.50×20 Mickey Thompson ATZ P3s on 20×10 American Force shields. To help turn the larger tire mass the stock gears were swapped out for a set of 4.56 Yukons along with EBC rotors and pads to help improve stopping power. For a clean look and easy access, a set of Amp Research steps were fitted. Inside the truck maintains a clean appearance with black leather seats and Pioneer head unit. Digital Designs subs and speakers were installed throughout the cab and outside to get the party going anywhere he goes. The 6.6L Duramax has plenty of power right from the factory, but that didn’t stop PK from installing a Superchips tuner and Edge CTS monitor, Airdog 165 lift pump, Airaid cold air intake, and a  5” MBRP stainless exhaust system. Out back the bed has a bedrug liner and Undercover flex tonneau cover. A rear Fusion bumper mounts addition Rigid lights and in place of the stock spare tire resides a pair of Zenith air compressors and (2) 5-gallon tanks that power Nathan P5 train horns. Just like train horns, the graphics weren’t left very tame either with a custom carbon fiber flame with blue/black vinyl wrap was designed and installed by Stickerdude Designs for a menacing appearance. All-in-all the truck turned out great and we’re looking forward to seeing it in action. To see more of this truck in action, check it out on Facebook.

When it comes to building a US Army Search & Rescue truck to navigate the harsh rocky terrain of the Hawaiian islands, it needs to be a go anywhere, do anything type rig. The truck is also outfitted with 35×12.50 Toyo M/Ts, 17×9 XD Enduro wheels, camper shell w/ rack, dual batteries, Viair constant duty air system to run tools and equipment, and hydraulic pumps to run their soon to be installed winch and jaws-of-life.

Its definitely a cool purpose built search & rescue truck in the making. The US Army relies on BDS to save lives and get the job done, how do you use your BDS equipped ride?
