BDS New Product Announcement #252: RECOIL Traction Bars for Toyota Tundra

PR252

BDS Suspension adds to its lineup of RECOIL traction bars with new kits designed specifically for the 2007-2016 Toyota Tundra trucks. Similar to existing kits, these patent pending traction bars use heavy wall construction and a full floating design that won't bind up the suspension during articulation. The new mounting kit is built from 1/4" steel and is an easy bolt-on install only requiring a few holes to be drilled at the frame. At one end, the bars use a forged flexed end that can be adjusted to load or unload the 3000lb rated compression spring at the other end. This revolutionary design controls axle wrap and give your Tundra better traction when towing, racing, 4wheeling or daily driving on the road. These traction bars will fit stock and lifted trucks. RECOIL Traction Bars: Earlier this year BDS Suspension introduced the revolutionary spring loaded traction bar system, the RECOIL traction bar. This patent pending design was engineered to improve traction and limit axle wrap without negatively affecting suspension travel or ride quality. BDS has expanded its lineup to now include specific mounting kits for the 2007-2016 Toyota Tundra 2WD/4WD trucks. These next generation traction bars offer you the freedom to tune the spring tension for optimal performance on-road, off-road, towing, or competition pulling. These traction bars can be used on stock height or lifted trucks and work with both lift blocks and replacement leaf spring kits. They use a full floating design that won't bind up allowing the full range of wheel travel without limiting articulation.

These new RECOIL traction bars are built to the highest standards for the ultimate performance on and off-road. The bars are fabricated from 2" OD x 3/16'' wall steel tubing with a threaded bung welded in toward the axle and a CNC machined end at the frame. The axle mount uses the tried and true BDS large forged flex end and jam nut to take whatever abuse you throw at it. Utilizing a forged housing with large 1-1/4" -12 threaded shank, a single sided snap ring and 1-piece flex ball, the flex ends are capable of up to 15-degrees of misalignment in either direction. At the frame end the bar uses a durometer specific polyurethane bushing and free floats in the traction bar utilizing a pair of dual stage internal compression springs and UHMW polyurethane bearings. The main spring has a 3000lb spring rate. Both ends are greaseable and serviceable. Fully assembled the RECOIL traction bars are 60" long and mount to the vehicle using fabricated 1/4" steel brackets. Bracket kits are vehicle specific. The frame brackets install by drilling mounting holes for the brackets while the axle brackets install on the spring pad and secure using existing u-bolts. The traction bars and mounting brackets use a durable gloss black powdercoat finish.

These new RECOIL traction bars are built to the highest standards featuring quick and easy adjustment while installed on the vehicle. To adjust spring tension, use the supplied spanner wrenches at the axle to loosen the jam nut. From there the main bar can be rotated to load or unload the springs at the frame side of the bar. Using the concave end of the wrench handle against the frame end check the location of the end of the main bar in relation to the notches on the wrench to verify the load on the springs, the shorter the distance the more loaded the springs are. Repeat this process on the other traction bar and use the wrenches to tighten down the jam nuts and you are ready to go! Join the revolution with the next generation RECOIL traction bars from BDS Suspension.

I’m running BDS 7″ lift kit on my tundra. Seeing the recoil traction bar looks amazing! I’m just curious what is the purpose of it & is it necessary to have? I don’t mind of purchasing it. UTs another awesome looks to my truck. Plz let me know thanks

Hey Nick,
We outline the purpose/benefits of running the RECOILs in the new product announcement, but to recap and give a bit more explanation on traction bars – traction bars help limit axle wrap (where the axle twists in heavy torque situations, often caused by too soft of a leaf spring or due to lift block causing more leverage on the spring). The axle wrap causes wheel hop, loss of traction, and potentially premature wear of suspension/drivetrain components. Other traction bars on the market use a fixed mount at both ends which keeps the axle from wrapping, but limits articulation and ride quality as the arc of the traction bars doesn’t match the arc of the leaf springs causing them to bind up. The RECOIL traction bars help keep the rear axle planted while still allowing articulation. They use a full float design that can rotate and an internal 3000lb rated spring that allows some “give and take” to arc with your suspension when your out on the trail. The internal spring can be preloaded (tightened down) to stiffen up the rear end to hard launches/towing a trailer or left looser to allow more motion during on-road and trail use. While its not a requirement on a lifted Tundra it is a common upgrade being that those trucks have a fairly soft leaf spring and there’s a 4″ rear block creating more leverage for the axle to twist under heavy acceleration.

Gotcha. Thanks. Last but least will these help my pinion and gears since it’s lifted and running 35″ going to 37″ soon? Will really like to know. Thanks

The traction bars won’t effect the pinion angle at ride height, but they will help keep the pinion from rotating up during hard acceleration. The rear block used in our 7″ lit kit is tapered to help correct the pinion angle. If you need to adjust the pinion angle more a degree shim or our rear 1″ shackles may be a good option for you. I was looking at placing order and happened to noticed a important message on customer note saying before buying or bidding. To make sure if the right one for you. Said 0″-6″ lift and I have 7″ bds lift kit. Or they are saying 0″-6″ lift block? Which I have 4″ if not mistaken.

Hey Nick,
You can purchase the parts right off our website or through your local BDS distributor. The 0-6″ is in reference to the rear lift, which is 4″ on the Tundra 7″ lift systems, these will work with your current setup.

Hey Andrew, these Recoils are compatible with most lift kits on the market and will work with all BDS 3″ – 4.5″ – 7″ lift kits.

These Recoils are designed to work with most lift kits on the marketing so you shouldn’t have any issues bolting them up with the RC lift on your Tundra Crew Max
