A few years back we overhauled a worn out, run of the mill, grocery getter of a ’05 Liberty CRD to take on the 4Wheel & Offroad Ultimate Adventure. The plan was simple, start with the most hated Jeep that we knew of at the time (to many the KJ that replaced the beloved XJ) and turn it into something cool, different, and most importantly capable offroad. Using a mix of off the shelf parts and some custom fabrication the BDS R&D build a low slung diesel rock crawler that is ready for Moab or a trip to the dunes.       We’ve found over the years its easier to not tally up the total build costs. That said there is a fair amount of investment in parts, fabrication and labor to complete this KJ.

    How did the Jeep do on fuel with the 2.8 CRD during Ultimate Adventure? I have long been drooling over the KJ platform for the availability of the CRD alone. I haven’t researched this build enough to know what final gear ratio it ended up with (to see how it did on fuel, gearing matters). On a different note, what is your opinion on the KJ Chassis as far as rigidity and flex? Does it require quite a bit of stiffening under high flex situations to keep doors functional like the XJs? Thank you in advance for the answers to these questions of mine. Looking forward to getting my ’06 CRD project rolling the right way.

      Hey Adam,
      Thanks for reaching out. We’ve been really impressed with the 2.8L CRD, even with 40s and 5.13 gears we averaged 22-25mpg on road days. We’ve all been really impressed with the KJ, its a stout and we’ll go out there and say it “under appreciated” vehicle. Being it was Jeep’s first IFS experiment they overbuilt a lot of the vehicle to ensure it didn’t fail. We cut out chunks of the unibody and up it didn’t lose much rigidity giving us a “frame rail” to build off of for the suspension mounts We plated around the steering box mount and suspension mounts to be on the safe-side, but it likely would have held up without the added effort.

    Thank you for the quick reply Carter. I’ve been watching re-runs of UAs and I must say I am a bit jealous to say the least. Is Project KJ still around the shop?

      It’s been a fun Jeep, definitely turns a lot of heads. We’ve got it out in the field currently used for events and trail rides from from Nevada to Colorado. We had it out running Carnage Canyon late last year followed by SEMA, then at Winter 4×4 Jamboree and KOH. We just had it out at the Mint 400 last weekend, it’ll be out in Moab for EJS here in a couple weeks. You can see some of the most recent

    Love the build. Curiosity, which Edge monitor is able to connect with the KJ? I was running a used Watchdog for numerical readings of temps but it has some loose connections and they are more expensive than the edge products nowadays.

      Hey Cody,
      Its been a few years since I addressed that topic so I may not have it 100% accurate, but I believe this is the Edge Insight CTS monitor with a custom tune loaded on it. We were leaning on our friends at Diesel Power Products for their diesel tuning expertise at the time this build was coming together. That said the setup has worked great for us over the years
