A few years back we overhauled a worn out, run of the mill, grocery getter of a ’05 Liberty CRD to take on the 4Wheel & Offroad Ultimate Adventure. The plan was simple, start with the most hated Jeep that we knew of at the time (to many the KJ that replaced the beloved XJ) and turn it into something cool, different, and most importantly capable offroad. Using a mix of off the shelf parts and some custom fabrication the BDS R&D build a low slung diesel rock crawler that is ready for Moab or a trip to the dunes. Check out our latest overview video on BDS’s Project KJ and to see more on hos this Jeep was transformed from stock to what it is today check out the blog thread complete with photos, videos and writeups at https://blog.bds-suspension.com/?cat=393&paged=6

BDS’s Carter and Dave are back with a final update on Project KJ, the company’s 2005 Jeep Liberty CRD getting prepped for the 2014 Ultimate Adventure (UA). With less than 2 days to go the BDS R&D crew has been busy working through the prep list. The new 40×13.50×17 Nitto Trail Grapplers were mounted up on a B.A.D. Eklipse 17 beadlocks, a spare tire carrier was fabbed up, master cutoff switch installed, Fox 2.0 hydraulic bumps installed, stiffer Pac Racing Springs installed on the tuned Fox 2.5 coilovers, redesigned motor mounts, the rock sliders finished being fabbed up, the front axle trussed, the interior reinstalled, and spare parts and tools were packed for the trip. Great job to the BDS R&D crew for their hard work in prepping the rig. Stay tuned as we hit the road Friday morning in route to this year’s UA and follow along as we post daily photos and video updates from the week. UA-2014
BDS Suspension is excited to be the official suspension sponsor of the 2014 Ultimate Adventure (UA) hosted by 4-Wheel & Off-Road Magazine. This annual event held each summer brings together 25+ trail rigs for a week of hardcore no whining, follow the leader style 4wheeling, camping, and back roads as the convoy takes on the challenging terrain of a region in the US. The group averages 1000+ miles over the weeklong journey and hits 4-5 trails along the way. The kicker is always not knowing the UA start location until just weeks prior. Each day on the trip at the daily driver’s meeting the group finds out from leader Rick Pewe whether it’ll be trail day or a 300-mile road day to get to the next spot, sometimes both.
One of the reasons we like to sponsor the Ultimate Adventure has to do with participate in the event as well. Building a rig, taking on the trails, the long road days, the sleep deprivation, and road-side wrenching to make it through the week. We’re passionate about this hobby and love the chance to take on the UA. Last year we stepped outside of the norm and went for an oddball of rigs. We took on the challenge of turning the most unliked 4×4 out there and turning it into something cool. While we started with an ’05 Jeep Liberty, we gave ourselves a break and started with the CRD model, swapped in solid axles, coilover long arm suspension, body trimming and cage work. The end result was a ultra-cool low slung Liberty on 40s. While we had our share of electrical and mechanical failures last year, the team has continued to improve Project KJ over the past year. BDS Reps Carter and Dave are ready to tackle the adventure wherever it may be.
Stay tuned to the BDS Blog, Facebook, and Instagram as we’ll keep you up to speed on Project KJ and what’s happening during the 2014 Ultimate Adventure. Watch the magazine’s planning and coverage at Ultimate Adventure 2014.

BDS hits the powder at SnoFari 2014

This past weekend BDS hit the highway for a short 3 hour trip up north for the snowy 4wheeling adventure known as SnoFari. With Project KJ in tow, we took our 2013 Ram 3500 dubbed Project Slate up for a weekend of wheeling in the snow cloaked trails around West Branch, MI. Hosted by the Soldiers of Fortune Offroad Club (SoFo) SnoFari brings out roughly 80 rigs for 2 days and nights in the powdery white stuff. This marking the 8th annual event was on the snowier side with plenty of accumulation this winter in Michigan and several inches of fresh powder and single digit temps all weekend long.

BDS hit the trails in our ’05 Liberty CRD and took turns carving a path through the 12-30” snow drifts out on the trail. We had a blast wheeling with the group, catching up with old friends and making new ones along the way. Following the Saturday trail day we came inside to thaw out at the banquet, serving up a great spread of food to grub out on, raffle off sponsor donations and hand out the SoFo trail awards. We were honored this year to take home the “So Bling” award for turning our mall crawler KJ into the super cool crawler it is today.

We appreciate everyone’s hospitality and look forward to next year’s SnoFari. Check out the links below for more photos from SnoFari 2014 and to keep up with the planning for 2015 head over to GreatLakes4x4.com
