The General - as it has been affectionately known - is a true workhorse of a truck. This rig has been a part of it all from multiple cross country tips hauling vehicles, wheeling out in Moab, and being cut apart to prototype new products to bring to market.  As one of the longest running trucks in the BDS fleet, this 2012 Ford F250 Super Duty has plenty of stories to tell from the use and abuse by our staff. From Michigan to Moab, this rig has wheeled its way through the country, hitting some of the top trails along the way. Coldwater, MI: BDS Suspension is now offering 2.5" radius arm lift systems for the 2020 Ford Super Duty. Available with full length ProRide coil springs or FOX 2.5 factory series remote reservoir coilovers, these 2.5" radius arm systems are designed to improve the stance of your Super Duty while taking performance, capability and ride quality to the next level with clearance for 35" tires. The coilovers option offers vastly superior damping capability to soak up the harshest terrains offroad while offering comfort for your daily commute. They feature a smooth bore and honed seamless alloy body, 7/8" hardened stainless steel shaft, black anodized machined 6061-T6 billet aluminum mounts and remote reservoir and come fully assembled with FOX coil springs. These coilovers are pretuned for optimal performance and preset for 2.5" of lift right out of the box with the weight of the 6.7L Powerstroke diesel engine. They install easily using the supplied bolt-on frame and axle mounting brackets.

In place of the factory stamped steel arms this kit upgrades to heavy duty BDS radius arms. These brawny arms are built from 1-3/4" OD heavy wall tubing, fully welded with gussets for superior strength to the factory units light weight stamped steel units they are replacing. The heavy wall tubular construction improves strength while correcting caster with a lower cam slot. At the frame mount a large OE-style rubber bushing is used to better isolate of NHVs and allow for quiet operation without any need for maintenance. These bushings offer superior durability and quieter operation than arms with heims and flex joints. Also upgraded as part of these new 2.5" lift systems is a high strength replacement track bar designed to recenter the front axle with the lift installed. This new track bar is adjustable, built from 1-3/8" solid steel stock with gusseted ends and a fine thread center turnbuckle with pinch bolts. The track bar comes pre-assembled and ready to bolt into the factory location to adjust to length. At one end these use a greaseable, high-durometer polyurethane bushing and the other end a heavy duty ball joint. This setup offer strength, comfort and quiet operation over track bars that use heims. Rounding out the front of these kits are front brake line relocation brackets to allow enough slack in the lines to cycle the suspension offroad while the sway bar relocation brackets to correct sway bar operating angle for optimal performance without sacrificing approach angle.

In the rear, these kits use a slightly taller 4" replacement lift block and new black e-coated u-bolts to net a level stance without the need to stack blocks to do it. The block integrates a bump stop wing to correctly limit suspension up travel and allow you to retain the factory rear springs to maintain tow capacity. Finishing out the rear are a pair of NX2 or FOX 2.0 performance series gas shocks to compliment the front performance. BDS Project Go Beyond

For paint and body work, the team turned to Butler Body Shop for their close proximity and great track record painting our vehicles. A 2-tone pattern was selected tying in the OE Agate Black paint up top with Chroma Elite Copper on the lower half and a white aluminum pinstripe running along the OE body line.

With the truck back from paint  and other accessories returning from powdercoat, its a mad dash to the finish. As with most SEMA builds the "SEMA crunch" is in full effect as the team pulls long nights and early shifted to get the truck reassembled for the final time. The tent, lighting and other recovery gear are added and all wiring is completed either going through the factory upfitter switches or through the rear battery disconnect switch. The storage cabinets are loaded with kitchen and camping gear along a compressor/tank kit to run tools and fill tires. A 2000-watt power inverter and 12V power supplies were added along with Kicker BF400 portable bluetooth speakers. The winch and lighting are added back in the bumpers, the bed tray reinstalled and fitted with accessories. Due to the height of this truck, the original plan to mount the Dometic CFX-75DZW electric fridge and 2-burner gas grill directly on the CargoGlide for easy access wasn't going to work unless your 7ft+ tall so MSA 4x4 drop slide outs were ordered from Australia and shipped in. These allow the "kitchen" to not only be pulled out but also lowered 12" for ease of use at the campsite.

BDS Project Go Beyond

The build team is really catching their stride, working together to fit, fab and finish prep on the various components. Up front a Addictive Desert Designs stealth fighter front winch bumper is bolted into place. While it would typically fit like a glove the flared fenders require the ends to be cut and extended out to match the new bulged body line of this truck. This bumper will allow fitment of a Warn Zeon 12S Platinum winch with synthetic rope and a Sidewinder hook. For lighting a Rigid 40" RDS lightbar and dual 10" SR LEDs were added to outshine the night. In the rear, we were looking to match the styling of the ADD front while working off the larger Knapheide service box. The build team designed and build a custom rear bumper that integrates the hitch, more Rigid LED lighting and shackle mount recovery points. With the bumper knocked out the team turned to the fuel filler. With no direct compatibility between the service box and custom fuel tank the team devised a plan to fit build out a mount to house the factory filler neck and fuel door to integrate into one of the storage compartments giving a clean, OE appearance and functionality for both the diesel fuel and DEF fluid. The setup allows independent use of the fuel filler door or storage compartment.

Storage... its key when building an overlander. Along with the added storage capacity of the Knapheide service box, a custom modular bed rack is being built to maximize storage and allow fitment of a James Baroud Evasion XXL hardshell tent, Maxtrax recover devices, Rotopax fuel and water storage, Rigid flood lighting, A James Baroud awning, Hi-Lift 60" extreme jack, shovel, fire extinguisher, ladder and other gear. Above the cab a Rhino Rack was added to the roof of the truck with the help of their low profle Backbone mounting system. This will offer additional storage as well as a roof top "deck" easy to access from the tent.

These new 2020 Super Duty trucks have several front grille and headlight options to match the different OE trim packages. While this truck is an XLT with the standard halogen lights and chrome surround grille, the plan was to fit LED headlights and a particular grille only found on a few top trim level F450 models. Being these trucks aren’t out yet there wasn't an option to pick one up from the local Ford dealer so after some digging we ran across Lack Trim Systems, the OE supplier that was able to accommodate our request and get us the grille we were looking for. All it needs now is some paint will be taken care of at the same time as the rest of the truck. An OE set of LED headlights were sourced along with a LED conversion harness from The Retrofit Source. Stay tuned for Episode 4 as this truck gets painted and and the team does final assembly with less than a week before it hits the road for SEMA.

BDS Project Go Beyond

With a game plan in place and a multitude of various parts and accessories converging on the build site in Coldwater, MI the build team continued to fit accessories. Up front a set of Fiberwerx fiber fenders were fitted . These feature a larger opening and 4" bulge to more tire clearance and extra tire coverage. These flares in combination with the 4" BDS coilover system installed in the last episode give clearance to allow a set of 40x14.50x20 Mickey Thompson MTZ P3 tires to be installed mounted temporarily on a set of wheels. The plan for the show is to mount them on a set of 20x10 Method NV605 in black to get the look and stance. To help with the extra weight and carrying capacity of the team added a Ridetech level tow airbag system that integrates ride height sensors and compressor to automatically level the stance when loaded down with gear or towing heavy loads.

Already at this point the Knapheide service box has been on and off the truck a few times as the team checks clearances and begins preparing other accessories around it. One fitment issue that needs to be addressed at this point is the rear fenders. The rear fender openings weren't going to allow enough clearance for the 40s so the team fabbed up a set of rear fenders to accommodate a much larger wheel arch along with building out a flare to match the OE styling for a clean appearance.

Next step was bed access. With the size of this truck and the need to ease access to gear and supplies the inside of the bed by fitting a CargoGlide CG2200XL slide out tray. The slide out is easy to use with the ability to extend a full 8ft and can support up to 2200lbs. The plan is to use this to mount out fridge, grill, spare tires and gear storage. With the truck sitting much taller than stock a set of Ford Performance "Tremor" running boards were added to allow easier access to the command center. Moving inside the stock factory cloth bucket seats and rear bench were pulled in favor of some upgrades. The crew at Auto Image made quick work of installing a custom set of Katzkin premium mahogany and black leather seat skins with silver piping and embroidered headrests. Stay tuned to see how those turn out and how they'll tie into the paint scheme.

At this point the shop is full of parts, some removed and others freshly received. Measurements have been taken and the team is hard at work designed the rack, the bumper mods and other parts in preparation for next steps.
