Many of you have followed along as Project KJ took shape over the last year. What started as a 2nd hand bone stock ’05 Jeep Liberty CRD was transformed last Spring into the unique low slung solid axled Liberty rolling 40s that you see today. We documented every step of the build with photos, videos, and weekly writeups as the BDS R&D team prepped it for a shakedown run on the 7-day, 1000+ mile offroad roadtrip known as Ultimate Adventure. Following that trip, bugs were worked out and its been out wheeling and promoting at shows around the country. During one weekend at nearby Rocks & Valleys Offroad Park in Harrison, MI we met up with John Herrick from Crawl Magazine who jumped at the chance to shoot the Liberty. Along the way John “crawled” behind the wheel (cheesy, I know) of the Liberty CRD for what ended up being the better half of an afternoon spent weaving through the trails and getting a feel for how a KJ on 40s handles.  In John’s words “they almost had to pry me out of it. You certainly don’t think you’re in a first gen Liberty when running this rig. I exited with my man-card still in my wallet”.

Out on the newstands January-February 2014, Issue No.44 of Crawl Magazine has 8-pages of ink on Project KJ in an article titled “40s on a Mall Crawler: How a Jeep grew up”. That article has plenty of shots of the KJ in action and tells about John’s experience behind the wheel of the mighty little coal roller. Pick up your copy and read all about the KJ and other great stories, tech and features in the magazine.

Chris-Dodge

Congrats to Chris Buziecki on his feature in the September 2013 issue of 8-Lug Magazine! He’s running a super clean color matched ’09 Ram 2500 Cummins sporting the BDS 8″ long arm kit (with 2″ coil spacers for 10” of lift), BDS triple shock mount, BDS traction bars, and 38″ Toyo M/Ts on 20×12 Fuel Hostages. Chris had the kit installed at BDS distributor by Attitude Performance. Read all about it in this month’s 8-Lug Mag on newsstands now.

Phil Howell, editor-in-chief over at 4Wheel Drive & Sport Utility Magazine is nearing completion on one of his latest project rigs, an ’89 Jeep Wrangler YJ dubbed “Real Steel YJ”. Though no Jeep project is ever truly finished, the rig is prepped and Phil is ready to hit the trail. Roughly a year in the making, this YJ sports a healthy list of mods with a subtle exterior appearance. This resto-build began as a far cry from the original Jeep that rolled off the showroom floor with drivetrain missing, paint faded, rusty panels and a worn out interior. Today the rig sports a beefed up appearance and reliable drivetrain ready for trail use at a moments notice.

Under the hood a MoTech aluminum block Chevy 5.3-liter V8 offers up increased horsepower while weighing in similar to the original 4.2L Inline-6. The transmission was swapped for a 6L80 6-speed automatic, while an Atlas transfer case handles the extra power and crawling duties when this rig wheels Moab. For axles a pair of Currie 9” units were installed with 35” Goodyear MT/R Kevlars on 17” Raceline beadlocks. To clear room for the larger rubber, Phil sourced a BDS 3.5” leaf spring kit complete with drop pitman arm, bump stops, and Fox 2.0 shocks. Rock protection comes from Savvy Offroad with new bumpers and rock sliders and if this YJ finds its way into a tough spot a Warn Zeon 10-S winch for a quick recovery.

This project has been fun to watch come together over the past few issues of 4Wheel Drive & Sport Utility Magazine.
