Anyone who is a fan in recent years of motorsports will know the name Drive Line Magazine. They’ve taken a fresh approach to covering the automotive scene with editorial, tech, and event coverage spanning across multiple media platforms from digital, social, video and print. Recently they ran an install and review that dug into the tech behind the BDS 2-3″ Coilover Conversion System for the 2011-2019 Chevy/GMC 2500HD trucks.

The owner of the vehicle in the video did not particularly like the nose-down rake that the truck comes with. A basic leveling kit was not satisfying their desire for a smooth ride while being level. This is when they looked to BDS Suspension.

Building on the tried and true BDS high clearance system, these upgrade kits feature FOX 2.5 factory series coilovers with remote DSC reservoir. These coilovers feature a smooth bore and honed seamless alloy body, 7/8" hardened stainless steel shaft, FOX coil springs, black anodized machined 6061-T6 billet aluminum mounts and FOX's DSC (dual speed compression) adjustment technology. The DSC adjustment allows for easy adjustment of the vehicle's suspension compression damping to dial in the ideal ride performance to soak up the bumps, both large and small. The DSC has 12 adjustment points for the high speed compression as well as 10 adjustment points for the low speed compression allowing you to make large or small changes to further improve your performance on any terrain. 4.5"/6.5" Coilover Conversion Systems - Ever since the launch of BDS Suspension's coilover conversion systems for late model (2011+) Chevy/GMC HD trucks there has been a huge demand in the aftermarket for similar options for the earlier 2001-2010 HD trucks and SUVs. The factory cast steel lower control arms are retained with the addition of a robust lower coilover mounting bracket.

Along with the coilover conversion, these 4.5"/6.5" coilover systems includes a pair of one-piece laser cut high clearance crossmembers, CNC machined ductile iron steering knuckles to correct steering angles, heavy duty front skid plate and differential skid plate to increase protection, multipoint differential relocation brackets to secure differential and correct CV axle angles, CV spacers, and longer sway bar links. In the rear, these kits are designed to level the stance to the front. BDS offers a 3" rear block kit for the 4.5" systems while the 6.5" systems are offered with your choice of 5" rear block kit or replacement GlideRide leaf springs. BDS Suspension expanded its FOX coilover lineup with 6.5" coilover conversion high clearance systems for the 2011-2016 Chevy Silverado HD and GMC Sierra/Denali HD trucks giving a new level of performance and comfort to truck owners. These new coilover systems have been engineered and tested for improved comfort, fade free performance, and increased suspension travel.

The new 6.5" coilover system is a game changer for HD performance. At the heart of the system is a pair of FOX 2.5 Factory Series Coilover with remote DSC reservoir. These coilovers offer vastly superior dampening for impressive capability to soak up the harshest terrains offroad while offering comfort on your daily commute. These FOX coilovers feature a smooth bore and honed seamless alloy body, 7/8" hardened stainless steel shaft, FOX coil springs, black anodized machined 6061-T6 billet aluminum mounts and FOX’s DSC (dual speed compression) adjustment technology. The DSC adjustment allows for easy adjustment of the vehicle’s suspension compression dampening to dial in the ideal ride performance to soak up the bumps, both large and small. The DSC has 12 adjustment points for the high speed compression as well as 10 adjustment points for the low speed compression allowing you to make large or small changes to further improve your performance. The ball joint cups are repositioned for optimal performance allowing a 30% improvement in wheel travel. These upper control arms are finished in a durable black powdercoat and include a billet aluminum ball joint dust cap. The control arms come fully assembled for easy install right out of the box. To compliment the uppers, the new lower control arms are built from high strength steel, fully boxed with internally gusseted. These lower arms integrate new reinforced lower coilover mounts and similar to the uppers use durometer specific rubber bushings at the frame mount and high quality Moog ball joints at the knuckle mount for quiet, low maintenance operation.

Along with the coilover conversion, this 6.5" system includes a pair of one-piece laser cut high clearance crossmembers, CNC machined ductile iron steering knuckles to correct tie rod angles, heavy duty front skid plate and differential skid plate to increase protection, multipoint differential relocation brackets to secure differential and correct CV axle angles, longer sway bar links and braided stainless steel extended brake lines. In the rear, BDS offer both a 3" and 5" rear block and u-bolt kit to lift and level the stance. The 5" rear block kit includes a u-bolt flip kit with new spring plate and the preferred round u-bolts for increased strength and ground clearance. To compliment the performance in the front this system includes precision tuned FOX 2.0 IFP gas shocks in the rear. This system allows for up to 37" tires to be installed.

Along with prepping the booth displays, prepping new products, and scheduling meetings for the week of SEMA, this year the BDS team is working on a last minute truck build to serve as one of the featured booth vehicles for us at the show. While SEMA is full of over the top builds, crazy paint jobs and and more LED lights than one could ever need, the BDS team was looking to build a capable, practical, and  reliable truck that is at much at home on the trail as it is on the road. While the BDS F250 and Project Slate have been excellent trucks, able to tackle the terrain or reliably tow a trailer across country at a moments notice, we had a need to show off some of our newest components for the GM trucks.

Last month we picked up the newest vehicle to join the BDS fleet, a black 4 door, short bed, 6.6L Duramax-powered, 2015 Chevy Silverado 2500HD dubbed Project Raider. Along with using this truck to prototype and test new products, it’ll be used as our primary tow vehicle for events getting displayed all around the country. While we offer the 4.5” and 6.5” high clearance, no torsion bar drop kits for the ’11-15 GM HDs, we wanted to show off some of the new developments we’ve been working on with FOX. This truck will be running a prototype 3” Coilover Conversion System with FOX 2.5” coilovers with DSC adjusters, upper and lower control arms, and FOX IFP bumps (more on this prototype kit to come in the future). For wheels and tires we wanted a tire that would be excellent on the highway, preform in the dirt, and has a heavy load rating with all the towing this truck will do. We turned to Nitto for a set of their 35×12.50×20 Exo Grapplers and mounted them on a 20×9 (5” BSing) Fuel Hostage III wheels for the aggressive styling and gray with black beadlock color to match the truck. Up front we’re swapping the factory bumper for a N-Fab RDS series bumper and mounting a 40” curved zRoadz LED light bar to light up the trail. All the chrome was colormatched and vinyl graphics were installed. The factory projector H/Ls remain and the stock LTZ grille is getting upgraded to a X-Metal unit from our friends at T-Rex. With the larger tires installed we’re adding a set of Bushwacker extend-a-fender flares for extra coverage. Additionally N-Fab wheel-to-wheel steps will be bolted on for extra rocker protection and ease cab access. The bed will feature an Extang revolution tonneau cover and spray in bedliner. In the the BDS team fabbed up a matching rear bumper to allow the factory hitch to be retained. AFe supplied a high capacity aluminum finned differential cover as well as a cold air intake system. A Bully Dog diesel GT tuner is also on the docket to bring this Duramax to life.

At this point the team is working feverishly to prep the truck. It his the road on Monday for the 2000+ mile road trip hauling SEMA displays and a Jeep for our sister company JKS Manufacturing.
